Résumé : | In June 2004, the EC DG-Research launched a study on the scientific publication markets in order to assess their economic and technological evolution. Indeed, publishing is part of the whole research process and consumes significant public funds. The study reveals large price differences across journals, a positive link between journal prices and citations, and even more directly, between concentration in a scientific field and prices. These results are indicative of publishers' market power. On the other hand, information technologies allow for new business models to be introduced and for alternative ways to disseminate information. In this talk, we will discuss the results of an econometric study of prices, the alternative models for scholarly publication and the recommendations made to the European Commission. |
