Résumé : The article discusses water control and the protection against floods in the two main hydrographic basins in Belgium: river Meuse and river Scheldt. In the Meuse basin, the areas subject to mining subsidence have set specific problems. There, drainage and pumping-out works have been carried out. The water of the river Meuse is used for various purposes. It is also in this basin that there are the important surface water reserves and the main hydro-electric power stations. The Scheldt basin is divided into two parts: the maritime Scheldt and the inland Scheldt. In the maritime part, Belgium has worked out and is carrying out an important plan - the SIGMA plan - to ensure the protection of the basin against the disastrous effects of the storm tides.
