Résumé : Bifurcation mechanism responsible for the experimentally observed polarization self-modulation (PSM), in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) subject to optical feedback, was analyzed. Results indicated that PSM in an external cavity VCSEL was the result of a beating phenomenon between two distinct but close external cavity modes (ECM). PSM was observed along branches connecting two single ECM Hopf bifurcation points or bridges. These bridges sequentially appeared with increased feedback rate. © Oxford University Press 2002.
