Résumé : In medically assisted reproduction, surrogacy is probably the most controversial technique. There is often confusion between "partial surrogacy" and "full surrogacy". According to the legislation of each country, surrogacy may be prohibited, permitted or tolerated. Potential indications for surrogacy are: absent or scarred uterus, severe medical conditions incompatible with pregnancy and a few situations of repeated miscarriages or repeated in vitro fertilisation failures. Legal, psychological and medical counselling and screening are essential in these procedures. With this appropriate and multidisciplinary counselling, several European countries, including Belgium, show a positive and human experience of non-commercial surrogacy, carried out with respect for the different parties.
