Résumé : Many intensive care unit (ICU) patients receive a transfusion at some point during their ICU stay, but with concerns about adverse effects, limited availability and costs of blood transfusions, strategies to limit the numbers of transfusions are increasingly being explored and encouraged. In this chapter, we will briefly discuss the impact of blood transfusion on oxygen transport, the concept of "optimal" hemoglobin with currently suggested transfusion thresholds, strategies to reduce iatrogenic blood loss, and clinical strategies to reduce oxygen consumption.
