Résumé : On the eve of the fourteenth century, Adolph of Waldeck, Bishop of Liège, laid siege to the fortresses of Thuin and Mirwart, wrongfully occupied by the garrisons of John Ist, Earl of Hainaut. The reasons for this use of force were not only geopolitical. They also directly relate to Waldeck's ecclesiastical career before his accession to the episcopal seat of Saint Lambert. The study of his career as a provost of Utrecht allows to better understand his intransigence with the county of Hainaut during the 1302 crisis. It also sheds new light on the conflict by placing it in the framework of the famous quarrel between the lineages of the Avesnes and Dampierre families.
