Résumé : Jean Hiernaux's work is part of a rationalistic and humanistic trend. On the epistemological level it arises from a syncretism between population genetics, and inductive methodology and the utilization of numerical taxonomy, whose founding father is the French botanist Michel Adanson. Hiernaux contributed significantly to the deconstruction of classical raciology, a predarwinian and premendelian approach to human biological diversity. He also proposed a sound alternative method. Nevertheless raciology is still present in scientific discourse, and is very much so in the popular or ethnosemantic categories. Hiernaux's work has also implications on the ethic level: it constitutes a pertinent criticism of inegalitarian racism, of the fear of interbreeding and of the propensity to biofatalism. © 1989 Editrice II Sedicesimo.
