Résumé : The two types of equipment presently available use either a water pouch placed on the breast, the patient being in the dorsal decubitus position or the water tank where, most often, the breasts hang freely. The first technique is used in Japan and has led to the development of Kobayashi semiology which is still the basis of the interpretation of images obtained by mode B. The exact location of the lesion is not possible with the second technique, nor is palpation during examination. Comparison of the images obtained with both types of equipment in the same patient suffering from a well-defined pathology, has generally demonstrated the superiority of the water detection in asymptomatic patients is premature. Until now, no serious study has shown the effectiveness of ultrasounds in this situation.
