Résumé : Reviews aspects of Venezuela's population density, spatial distribution, and demographic growth, within a historical context. The author firstly considers pre-Colombian spatial organisation and the arrival of colonists, and then discusses the impact of mercantilist colonies. The period of independence up to 1930 was characterised by the increasing dominance of agriculture in the economy, followed by fundamental socio-economic changes as oil production began, specifically inter-region differentials in economic growth which led to new patterns of population migration. -P.Hardiman
