Résumé : The passage of air into the hepatic portal system during a double-contrast barium enema was encountered in a 19-yr-old patient with unsuspected granulomatons colitis. The injection of air into the portal system produced no adverse clinical signs, nor subjective feelings of discomfort, either during the examination or subsequently. A review of the available literature indicates the variety of potential causes of this type of incident, together with the physiopathologic mechanisms which may provide a possible explanation. The benign nature of iatrogenic air portography is stressed, in comparison to spontaneous portograms for which the outlook is poor due to the underlying disease.
