Résumé : A review of the literature and personal investigations is presented. After a short description of the morphological aspects of maturation in amphibian oocytes, induction of maturation in vitro by means of hypophysial hormones and progesterone is discussed. The activity of progesterone is described: its penetration and the existence of a receptor for this hormone in the oocytes. The nature of this receptor and its possible action are discussed in detail, especially with respect to the metabolism of the oocytes, and the role of the nucleic acids and protein synthesis; the role of the breakdown of the nuclear envelope, and of the contents of the nucleus is reviewed.
