Résumé : The influences affecting the development of an ectopic ossification process are reviewed. It is concluded that foci of ossifications found in the central nervous system are a particular instance of a more general phenomenon, always beginning with some inflammatory process (trauma, hemorrhage, viral or bacillary infection etc.). The role played by circulating maternal cells originating in the bone marrow and settling at the point of inflammation is stressed; there they are subjected to local induction factors and acquire an osteogenic capacity.
