Résumé : This chapter summarizes current theories about the functions of sleep. It neither aims at covering the whole range of the possible functions of sleep nor at providing an historical overview. Functions of sleep are discussed with regard to the evolution of sleep across phylogeny, the role of sleep for cerebral and body restitutions, models of sleep-related learning and memory consolidation processes, and bidirectional relationships between sleep disorders and mental health. Available evidence indicates that the neurophysiological phenomena that occur during sleep fulfil multiple functions, some of these actually present all over the sleep-wake cycle, while others perchance unique to sleep.
