Résumé : At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, between comparatism and structuralism, Ferdinand Brunot and Charles Bally aimed, each one in his own wa1y, to fully refresh French grammar and teaching. In the context of grammar, despite their common will to innovation, their positions in relation to diachrony and historical method were radically different. So were also their positions on the teaching of French. Here, although sharing the same will to reorganize everything and the same rejection of tradition, both Brunot and Bally diverge in dealing with the means to be used and the methods to be implemented.
