Résumé : The R-matrix-Floquet theory of multiphoton processes is extended to enable harmonic generation rates for a multi-electron atomic system interacting with a strong linearly polarized laser to be calculated. The matrix elements of the harmonic components are defined and several methods for their computation are described. In the two companion papers, applications of the theory to one-electron systems and to third-harmonic generation in magnesium are presented.
