Résumé : The origin of dislocation patterning associated with the localization of deformation in cyclically strained metals is discussed in the framework of a nonlinear dynamic approach of the reaction-diffusion type. It is shown that under the combined effect of dislocation motion and interactions uniform distributions may be unstable compared to spatial structures. The formation of the wall structure of persistent slip bands is treated as a particular example. We discuss the importance of the concepts of nonlinear dynamics and self-organization of dissipative structures in the fundamental understanding of deformation processes and plastic instabilities.
