Résumé : Transection of the mesencephalic tegmentum results in a strong and lasting activation of the hypnogenic region of the cat's basal preoptic area. The phenomenon was ascribed to the release of the hypnogenic center from a tonic inhibition by the reticular arousal system. In the course of these experiments it was discovered that light had a suppressive effect on the multiunit spike discharge recorded from the 'released' preoptic structure. This photic response is described and discussed in the present note.
