Résumé : This paper focuses on Theodoret’s account of the destruction of the temple of Zeus at Apamea by the local bishop Markellos (386 AD). Scholars usually consider Markellos’ attack as the earliest example of such violence against pagan monuments by Christian authorities. This article first stresses the limitations of the use of Theodoret’s account for documentary purposes. Second, it examines the function of this narrative in Theo- doret’s historical and apologetical work.
