Résumé : The aim of the paper is not to construct a full-fledged ESP course for theology students, but to draw attention to a number of problems which arise as soon as one starts giving serious thought to setting up a syllabus of this type. The requirements of this particular audience are highly specific indeed: religious language functions according to rules which clearly demarcate it from what is usually referred to as «ordinary» language use. If the student is taught the terminology but does not learn how to operate with these different modalities of meaning and use from which religious discourse derives its meaning in religious situations, then he or she has no access to the register. Parameters like metaphor logic and illocutionary force must be built into the ETP course.
