Résumé : While in actual linguistic interaction, failure to respect language rules may cause irritation or a breakdown in communication, in fiction the characters' linguistic clumsiness is entertaining. Examples are culled from Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Agatha Christie (Hercule Poirot) and Malcolm Bradbury (Rates of Exchange) to show that deliberate deviance from the linguistic norm may fulfil different functions.
