Résumé : We have studied the behaviour of N.chlorosuccinimide in the presence of different types of substances. The action of N.chlorosuccinimide upon cyclohexene gave 1‐2‐dichlorocyclohexane and very little 3‐chloro‐1‐cyclohexene. N.chlorosuccinimide reacted with toluene to give benzyl chloride and succinimide in practically quantitative yield. We have studied systematically the influence of different catalysts and solvents upon the reaction. Using this method we have carried out: The monochlorination of α‐and β‐methylnaphthalene, of o., m. and p.xylene and of ethylbenzene; The dichlorination of o., m. and p.xylene and the dibromination of 2‐3‐dimethylnaphthalene. Attempts to chlorinate p.nitrotoluene were unsuccessful. Copyright © 1950 Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim
