Résumé : The division of the Athenian society in four property classes is one of the least contested reforms of Solon. However, the amount of zeugite's income as transmitted by the tradition makes them owners of properties so vast that some scholars expressed doubts about the accuracy of these figures. A new analysis of the famous passage of Pollux (VIII, 129.6-131.1) taking advantage of a recent study on Greek metrology actually enables us to restore more plausible figures. The last part of this study tries to establish that these property classes were first instituted for the levying of the tax on the agricultural products which was attributed by tradition to the tyrant Peisistratus.
