Résumé :

On treatment with base, N‐cinnamoylmethyl‐α‐picolinium bromide 3 gives dimers 4 and 5 of 2‐styrylindolizine 1 originating from the Diels‐Alder condensation of the picolinium dienophile 3 with 2‐styrylindolizine or from the self‐condensation of the unsaturated ketone 3. Deuterium labelling allows to prefer the second proposal 2‐β‐Styrylindolizine 1 could be obtained with a 70 % yield by dropping a very dilute solution of salt 3 into a concentrated solution of base.
