Résumé : This article reviews the physical basis of these techniques. Tonometry by indentation of the cornea was practically the only method used for diagnosis and assessment of glaucoma before 1954. It should only be used with caution because of the many errors to which it is subject. These result from variations in the visco-elastic properties of the ocular envelope. It should be replaced whenever possible by tonometry by flattening, a simple and trustworthy method. The principles of tonometry by indentation are not, however, to be distrusted, since measurements of the ease of deformation are based on techniques which call into play the indentation of the cornea. The interpretation of tonography is only possible if these principles are known.
