Résumé : During the period 1962 to 1972, 136 patients found to have a primitive tumour of the oesophagus were treated by high-energy radiotherapy at the Bordet Institute. Among them, 120 patients were given radiation therapy only. For this group we got a one-year survival rate of 20%. Nevertheless, irradiation at efficient doses contributed to an improvement both subjective and objective to two-thirds of our patients. In 16 cases the treatment was combined with surgical resection. Only one patient has survived after a five-year period. A preoperative irradiation should enable us to obtain better results for this group.
