Résumé : In order to facilitate employment adjustment by firms and to reduce the unemployment rate, legislation regarding temporary employment has been relaxed in Belgium (as in most European countries) over the last 20 years. Accordingly, the share of temporary employment as a percentage of total employment in Belgium has increased from 5,3 to 8,9 percent between 1990 and 2011 (Eurostat, 2012). In this paper, we analyze - both from a theoretical and empirical perspective - to what extent the development of temporary employment influences the rent, i.e. the gap between productivity and wages at the firm level.© De Boeck Supérieur.
