Résumé : The effect of ischaemia on the isometric twitch time course is discussed according to the active state model suggested by Desmedt and Hainaut (1968). It is shown that staircase potentiation mechanisms do not depend upon the presence of aerobic processes whereas the maintenance of a 'steady potentiated state' is directly related to these processes. The time course of the relaxation phase seems to be very sensitive to aerobic contribution and it is suggested that normal relaxation is a better test of skeletal muscle recovery after exercise than normal force output.
