Résumé : Palatal processes from 15,5 and 14,5 day old rat embryos were cultivated in homologous pairs, in vitro, on chemically defined media to which actinomycin D had been added. An identical number of explants were cultivated, as controls, in the absence of actinomycin D. The pairs of processes dissected at the day 15,5 underwent a normal pattern of fusion in the presence of the antibiotic. On the other hand, the rate of fusion between the shelves which were removed at the day 14,5 significantly increased in the presence of actinomycin D. However, most of the seams obtained in the actinomycingrown specimen did not pass through the stage of epithelial fusion. No particular changes of the marginal epithelium were observed using routine histological methods. On the other hand, the mesenchyme adjacent to the areas of fusion displayed signs of cell degeneration after cultivation in the presence of the antibiotic. © 1970.
