Résumé : The main types of Iraklion marls are described and classified in geological terms and their mineralogy and structure are compared with other physical and mechanical properties. Activity, sensitivity, pre-consolidation and swelling characteristics of these marls were examined by testing specimens in the laboratory and an explanation and justification of the experimental results is attempted. The effective stress paths are drawn and the stress parameters are estimated in consolidated undrained triaxial tests. Finally the rheological behavior of marls in long-term consolidation tests is considered.
