Résumé : A study of the synthesis of ribonucleic acid in Xenopus laevis eggs at different embryonic stages was undertaken. The base composition of the RNA synthesized after varying periods of incubation in the presence of 32P-labelled phosphate was determined. RNA synthesis appears to begin sooner than was anticipated, namely just after fertilization, but it remains discrete during the early stages. A considerable increase occured at gastrulation. The possibility that the newly synthesized RNA consists in whole or in part of messenger RNA is discussed. © 1964.
