Résumé : The specific aspects of models such as classical Internet protocol (IP), MARS, NHRP, LANE and MPOA are discussed and compared. These models are referred as conventional models in the following text. They allow to emulate an IP or a medium access control service over ATM, and are characterized by the fact that they are defined in a non-intrusive way with ATM. Other model types are possible, such as MPLS, which is intrusive with ATM. The models which consider the underlying layer as a non-broadcast multiple access black box are presented, providing a connection oriented service. A complete re-engineering of conventional methods, into a single, unique generic model called multiprotocol over NBMA (MPON) is presented.
