Résumé : The present paper is an interim research report on developing a computational tool with which to teach reading skills in a foreign language. The starting point of this project was to consider reading as a type of problem-solving activity which can be modelled by an augmented transition network (ATN) parser. The resulting teaching tool consists of three main elements: a program which merely displays reading material, an on-line database called a dynamic dictionary, and a simple ATN parser, which, together with the dynamic dictionary, forms an expert reading system to be used as a trouble-shooting facility by the students. © 1990.
