Résumé : Breast reconstruction after radical mastectomy is performed in two stages. A first operation creates the volume by implantation of a silicone prosthesis under the pectoral muscle and the widely dissected thoracic skin. In 40% of the cases, addition of a musculo-cutaneous flap is necessary to improve the volume of the reconstructed breast. Three months after the first operation, the nipple and the areola are reconstructed by a skin graft which is preferably taken from the remaining breast. The study of 250 breast reconstructions performed by our team since 1977 demonstrates that reconstruction does not modify the evolution of the cancer, and affords a major psychological benefit.
