Résumé : The authors look at how incremental and limited change and deep structural change can be analytically and theoretically articulated. This can be understood when considering the broader dialectical relationship between European integration and Europeanization. The chapter mainly points at the – ambivalent – role of crises, politicization and junctures as conditions for a shift from limited to structural change. The argument is illustrated by references to the debt crisis in the Eurozone and democratization in Central and Eastern Europe. Whereas soft mechanisms had brought limited results, the context of the politicized crisis allows ‘fast forward Europeanization’, by breaking existing resistances and path dependencies. Again, this process does not consist in a paradigm shift in reform, but rather in the accelerated enforcement of long standing prescription for welfare state reform.
