Résumé : This essay deals with Roman face masks helmets which, following a citation in the Ars Tactica of Arrian, have commonly been linked with the sport cavalry equipment. On the basis of an unpublished census (amounting to 113 pieces) and compensate the lack of information from the archaeological contexts, this study examines epigraphical and technological aspects related to these helmets. While confirming their main use for the training of auxiliary cavalrymen, it points out the great heterogeneity of these artefacts both in the choice of materials and techniques and in the quality of workmanship. This dual approach provides new perspectives towards an improved understanding of Roman face mask helmets as a symbol of a common military culture within the whole Empire. © 2013 Verlag des Römish-Germanischen Zentralmuseums.
