Résumé : Scholars have drawn attention to the fact that Timaeus 60d2-5 seems to make no satisfactory sense. In this paper, I shall propose a new interpretation of 60d2-5, which respects the genuine reading of Plato’s manuscript A, is supported by the Greek and also relevant to the context in which this passage occurs. According to my interpretation, the above phrase is a concise reference to the special technique used for the decoration of fine painted Greek vases, namely three-phase firing or iron reduction technique.
