Résumé : It is possible to extract from pancreatic islets a lipophilic material displaying ionophoretic activity. The handling of cations by this material and the movements of cations in intact islet cells present several analogies. The present study was undertaken in order to gain some information on the chemical nature of these ionophores. For this purpose, lipids were extracted from groups of 240-480 rat pancreatic islets, and separated by thin-layer chromatography. The ionophoretic activity of different classes of islet lipids was then examined in a two-phase system. The phospholipid fraction accounted from 62.0 ± 8.5 per cent of the total ionophoretic activity. The fatty acid and triglyceride fraction also demonstrated significant ionophoretic activity.
