Résumé : Gas mixing is simulated using a piston and a cone model of the lung. An exact solution of the diffusion equation is derived in the case of a piston model and comparisons are made with numerical solutions using two different boundary conditions. It is shown that a nonhorizontal nitrogen alveolar plateau of a simulated single-breath test can be due to an inappropriate choice of boundary conditions. The cone model simulations approach the experiments reasonably well and give information about the dual tracer single-breath tests.
